Nicolai Figner was a leading lyric tenor of the Imperial Russian opera in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries — Tchaikovsky wrote the role of Hermann in 'The Queen of Spades' for him. This Zonophone disc (2-62481) couples 'In the Garden Shadows' with 'Printemps', the latter sung by R Figner (presumably his wife, the soprano Medea Mei-Figner). Early Zonophone pressings of major Russian singers are valued by collectors.
